Cobie dies at
Texas State Aquarium

Corpus Christi, Texas 24/09/2007

After a summer battling a lung condition, Cobie,
one of four Atlantic bottlenose dolphins housed at
Texas State Aquarium, died Friday.

"Cobie was a wonderful ambassador for his aquatic brethren,"
said Tom Schmid, aquarium executive director, "and he touched
the lives of millions of people."

The 15-year-old male dolphin arrived from the National Aquarium
in Baltimore in October 2005 with his partner, Shadow, also a
15-year-old male. Both still belong to the Baltimore aquarium,
which Schmid says will help find another partner for Shadow.

Dolphin shows were canceled Friday, but will resume today.

Mauyak gives birth at
the Shedd Aquarium

Shedd Aquarium, Chicago 16/08/2007

One of the beluga whales at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium
has given birth, and mother and calf appear to be doing well.

The 24-year-old whale called Mauyak was in labor for about
75 minutes, and the baby beluga was born at about 2:42 a.m.

Shedd officials say the calf and its mother will remain under
24-hour observation by the aquarium's animal care staff for several months.

The calf is male and more than five feet long and weighs about 100 pounds.

Dolphin dies at
Indianapolis Zoo

Indianapolis Zoo 26/06/2007

One of the Indianapolis Zoo’s Atlantic
bottlenose dolphins has died.

Phoenix, an adult female estimated to be 24
years old, unexpectedly succumbed Sunday
morning in the Zoo’s main dolphin performance pool.

A team headed by the zoo’s senior veterinarian,
Dr. Jeff Proudfoot, conducted a necropsy
(the equivalent of an autopsy in humans)
on Sunday evening. Dolphin demonstrations
on Sunday afternoon were canceled, but resumed today.

Preliminary results of the necropsy did not
indicate the cause of death, though she may have
suffered a seizure. Officials said there was no
evidence of any trauma or entrapment,
and Phoenix was a robust and healthy animal.

Two dolphins born at
SeaWorld Australia

Seaworld Gold Coast, Australia 22/06/2007

A dolphin has become a grandmother just weeks after
giving birth herself in a rare event at a Queensland theme park.

The 25-year-old bottlenose dolphin called Salty gave
birth to a male calf, named Sunrise, nine weeks ago
at Sea World, on the Gold Coast.

Two weeks ago, Salty's daughter Hallie gave birth to
a yet-to-be-named female.

Sunrise was Salty's second calf after she gave
birth to Hallie in 1990.

Sea World's marine sciences director Trevor Long
said the arrival of a third-generation calf was
extremely rare.

"This third-generation breeding is a testament to Sea
World's animal husbandry expertise," he said.

New dolphin dives
into the National Aquarium

Baltimore 18/06/2007

Something is happening at the National Aquarium,
and the dolphins know it. They are taking turns
peering through a small opening in the gate that
separates their tank from another one. In the next
tank is a new dolphin!

“They're really curious animals in general,” Aquarium
spokeswoman Hillary Bates said. “They know when somebody
new is in there.”

The new guy is Chinook, who arrived last week from
the Minnesota Zoo. He has come to pair bond — or become
buddies — with Bo, the Aquarium’s 3-year-old male dolphin,
Bates said.
